Last Night on Earth
This project was a collaboration between the team of “Hand mit Auge”, Jascha Süss, Lucas Dikany and me. Together with the director David Schalko we created a 1,5 hour-long show for the Opening of the Viennese cultural festival “Wiener Festwochen”. At this show multiple famous Austrian artists such as Kruder & Dorfmeister, Bilderbuch and Yung Hurn performed live. The show was attended by 50.000 people and was transmitted live on Austrias main television channel ORF.
For the creation of this show we meticulously crafted a modular 3D model of the mayors building and created 90 minutes of handcrafted 3D animated content for all the musical pieces as well as all the monologues of this show. Each team had their artistic freedom which resulted in wide variety of different styles and expressions.
The Challenges
This projection mapping show is one of the biggest ever created in Austria. We needed to cover nearly the whole front of the city hall including the 97m high tower resulting in a projected space of over 5000m². To be able to cover all this space we ended up using 8 high powered projectors with 6 different projection angles. The mapping of the projections onto the building took about 7 whole nights in total.
Rendering the project was a huge challenge. The final output had a resolution size of 8k. Because of the complicated mapping setup all scenes had to go through 5 stage rendering pipeline where we had to reproject and upscale all the scenes one after another. The final amount of data we created was over 14 terabytes for 1,5 hours of content.
